Evolution of interorganismal strigolactone biosynthesis in seed plants | Science
(Fr, 17 Jan 2025)
Strigolactones (SLs) are methylbutenolide molecules derived from β-carotene through an intermediate carlactonoic acid (CLA). Canonical SLs act as signals to microbes and plants, whereas noncanonical
SLs are primarily plant hormones. The cytochrome P450 ...

Neuronal-ILC2 interactions regulate pancreatic glucagon and glucose homeostasis | Science
(Fri, 17 Jan 2025)
The immune system shapes body metabolism, while interactions between peripheral neurons and immune cells control tissue homeostasis and immunity. However, whether peripheral neuroimmune interactions
orchestrate endocrine system functions remains ...

Distinct myeloid-derived suppressor cell populations in human glioblastoma | Science
(Fri, 17 Jan 2025)
The role of glioma-associated myeloid cells in tumor growth and immune evasion remains poorly understood. We performed single-cell RNA sequencing of immune and tumor cells from 33 gliomas,
identifying two distinct myeloid-derived suppressor cell (MDSC) ...

“Identity politics” is economic policy | Science
(Thu, 16 Jan 2025)
In the wake of the November 2024 US election, several commentators have suggested that the US Democratic Party abandon its commitment to so-called “identity politics,” which they identify as elitist,

Drought in a warmer, CO2-rich climate restricts grassland water use and soil water mixing | Science
(Thu, 16 Jan 2025)
Soil water sustains terrestrial life, yet its fate is uncertain under a changing climate. We conducted a deuterium labeling experiment to determine whether elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2),
warming, and drought impact soil water storage and ...

Nonalloyed α-phase formamidinium lead triiodide solar cells through iodine intercalation | Science
(Thu, 16 Jan 2025)
Formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3) is considered the most promising composition for high-performing single-junction solar cells. However, nonalloyed α-FAPbI3 is metastable with respect to the
photoinactive δ-phase. We have developed a kinetic ...

Global increase in the occurrence and impact of multiyear droughts | Science
(Thu, 16 Jan 2025)
Persistent multiyear drought (MYD) events pose a growing threat to nature and humans in a changing climate. We identified and inventoried global MYDs by detecting spatiotemporally contiguous climatic
anomalies, showing that MYDs have become drier, hotter,...

Forestry bill threatens the Amazon’s water cycle | Science
(Thu, 16 Jan 2025)
In May 2024, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed into law Bill No. 14.876, which removes silviculture from the list of potentially polluting activities, exempting it from the
environmental license requirement that applies to most agricultural activities in Brazil (1) and amending the National Environmental Policy (Law No. 6,938/81) (2). The bill also exempts forestry from
tax payments by waiving the Environmental Control and Monitoring Fee, encouraging the expansion of this cultivation in the Amazon (1, 2). Bill No. 14.876 should be revoked to prevent further
disruptions to the Amazon ecosystem (3–7).

Bolivian forests hold carbon storage potential | Science
(Thu, 16 Jan 2025)
Bolivia’s vast forests, including ecosystems of global conservation interest such as the Amazon rainforest and the Chiquitano dry forest (1), are threatened by increasing deforestation (2) and fires
(3). Government authorities have failed to recognize the ecosystem services that forests provide (4), especially carbon sequestration. Fortunately, a recent decision by the courts has given Bolivia
the opportunity to reformulate its forest protection strategy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and sequester more carbon.
